5. Dates & Plans

What you'll learn

  • Vietnamese date order (ngày, tháng, năm)
Dates go day of week, then date, month, year. For days 1 to 10, use mùng before the number; from day 11 on, use ngày.
Hôm nay là thứ tư, ngày mùng 8 tháng 1 năm 2025. : Today is Wednesday, 8 January 2025.
  • 'When?' with khi nào and bao giờ
Both mean 'when'. Their position sets the tense: at the start of the sentence they ask about the future, at the end they ask about the past.
Khi nào bạn đi Hà Nội? : When will you go to Hà Nội?
  • Near future with sắp (about to)
Put sắp before a verb for the near future, something about to happen very soon. It feels more immediate than sẽ.
Tết sắp đến rồi! : Tết is almost here!
