• Saying 'to be' with là
  Use là to link a subject to a noun or a name, like 'is/am/are'. It never changes for person or tense. To make it negative, put không before là.
  Tôi là Alex. : I am Alex.
• Choosing the right pronoun
  Vietnamese pronouns depend on your relationship and relative age, not just gender. As a beginner: use tôi for yourself, anh for a man your age or older, chị for a woman, and em for yourself when the other person is clearly older.
  Chào anh! Tôi tên là Linh. : Hi! My name is Linh.
• Asking 'what?' with gì at the end
  To ask 'what', keep the word order of a statement and add gì at the end, where the missing information belongs. You do not move it to the front like English.
  Tên bạn là gì? : What is your name?
